Hello! As a new advertiser in the magazine this month I thought that I would tell you a little bit about myself.

Zero Dry Time is a Tarvin based business covering most of Cheshire West. I retired after 30 years service with Cheshire Police and retrained with the UK’s number 1 dry carpet, upholstery and hard floor cleaners to take on this opportunity. You may wonder how carpets could be deep cleaned, sanitised, deodorised, stains removed and immediately walk dry but I guess the clue is in the name.

Situated in the heart of Helsby, Helsby Community Sports Club is a growing asset to the local community and surrounding areas. Currently the club is home to six resident sports - Bowls, Football, Fishing, Rugby, Running and Tennis. In addition, the club also run Darts and Snooker Teams and has a thriving Social membership.

The club is the former staff Sports Club for employees of the old BICC factory in Helsby, although its origins date back to 1895 when it was first formed as Helsby Athletic Club by the amalgamation of Helsby Cricket Club and Helsby Rugby Football Club. Taken over by BICC General Cables Limited in 1934, the club has catered for a number of different sports and recreation activities during its history, including cricket, hockey, badminton, table tennis, archery and chess. Since 1991 the club has been independently run as a non-profit making organisation by a volunteer Committee and currently the whole club proudly boasts a membership in excess of 500 adults and juniors.

Beer Heroes Tap Room opened at Helsby Railway Station in November 2016, a hidden gem for craft beer enthusiasts, attracting visitors from far and near.

We recently met up with the owners, Carl and Kelly and enjoyed sampling a selection of the beers and hearing how it all began....

Back in 2010, the couple ran a convenience store in Northwich and having a shared passion for beer they initially stocked 20 American Craft Beers, which quickly expanded to between 50 and 60 different beers from the UK as well as the States.

Four years later they were approached by Amazon and supplied several mixed packs to be sold in this way. Such was the success that Carl and Kelly decided to set up their own website and sell directly to the public in addition to Amazon.

“My idea was born over 4 years ago, inspired by a box we had with all the craft bits in, which got hidden away in the cupboard and dusted off, only when I could cope with the mess all over my beloved dining table.

I knew I wasn’t alone in my approach to home crafts, so my vision was to make the box bigger!
To make a space and resource that anyone could utilise. Gluing, sticking, painting, glazing and as much glitter as you want, somewhere to be creative, make a mess and leave it all behind!

We have activities available to suit every age, ability and budget.

Ceramics and decopatch are the old favourites but bag and apron decorating, canvas and glass painting are building momentum too. We also have a massive range of acrylic paints that can be used on any surface.

Just this year we have added 3D life castings and cake decorating sessions to our repertoire and all of our crafts are available as party options too!”

Please get in touch if you would like to find out more, or pop into The CraftBox to meet Jenny.

There is something spicy going on at Lady Heyes Craft Centre, Frodsham. A new business is now based there called My Spicy Blends.

Starting as a hobby by local chef Jeremy Harris, the demand for his products mean he has hung up his chefs hat to fully concentrate on the business.

‘I’ve always been interested in Asian, Indian and ethnic cuisines, and over the years customers have said that they wish they could do this style of cooking at home. However it’s not always possible to source the correct ingredients on the high street. What I do is combine all the necessary ingredients in one heat sealed pack. All the customer has to do is add the liquid, the meat fish or vegetables of their choice, cook it out and serve. I am always developing new dishes but so far we have a range from India, China, Thailand, Mexico and North Africa. The best sellers seem to be Balti, Tikka Masala, Szechuan and Jalfrezi. However when the sun is out I do see an increase in the more fragrant blends like Thai Red curry, Korma or Tagine.

My Spicy Blends also has a range of dry BBQ rubs, seasonings, pickles, sauces and chutneys.’We are open 6 days a week*, and it is great to be located amongst all the other businesses at Lady Heyes’. *Closed Tuesdays

You may never have heard of Property Fraud – but not knowing about it means that you are vulnerable. This devastating crime is on the rise, and the Land Registry claim to have prevented over £66 million of fraud in the last five years.

Property Fraud explained

There are many different kinds of Property Fraud and it is important that you understand some of the risks in order to avoid becoming a victim of fraud.

Imposters can obtain forged documents and pretend to be you - the property owner. They then raise money by applying for a mortgage in your name and disappear, leaving you with repayment obligations for a loan which you didn’t take out.

Lucy carrying a large basket of potatoesLucy is the 5th generation of the Jackson family at Teuthill Farm, Tarvin Road, Frodsham. Her Great, Great Grandfather, Harry was the first of the Jackson’s to farm here, followed by Tommy, Geoff and Paul.

Geoff’s wife, Gill started the farm shop in 1997 and when their son Paul and his wife Wendy took over, the shop expanded and new lines were introduced, although Gill’s homemade cakes still remained popular!

Many of you will have been regular customers of the lovely farm shop at Teuthill until it closed it’s doors several years ago to concentrate on the next business venture - Cheshire Farm Chips and I’m pleased to report that the business has gone from strength to strength.

JTO Vintage and The Old Bank Tea Rooms has been open for just over a year and what a massive success this has been for owner Diane and also a huge plus for Helsby.

I arrived early morning just as freshly baked scones were being dropped off, warm and smelling delicious, straight from the oven. Three local bakers provide all of the wonderful cakes, flapjacks, gingerbreads and scones. Popular demand certainly keeps them all extremely busy! One of the bakers specialises in gluten free cakes, which are prepared and cooked in a completely gluten free environment.
