Lady Captain of Helsby Golf Club, Christine Marsden, has named the Neuro Therapy Centre as her charity of the year.

She said: “My father had Motor Neurone Disease and I have friends and relatives with MS, Huntingdon’s Disease and other neurological conditions, so I realise how important exercise and socialising is to people with these health concerns. The centre and its staff provide the facilities and support whereby people with neurological conditions can join in various fitness classes and meet up with friends.”

Christine added: “In a normal year, our Lady Captain’s charity would benefit from a series of events held at the golf club. But this year due to the current pandemic, Helsby Golf Club has been closed, so I had to think of something different.”

Christine has taken up cycling during the lockdown and is using this interest to undertake a sponsored virtual cycle journey. During May and June she will be travelling 325 miles on local roads to fulfil the distance from Helsby Golf Club to Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland, excluding the ferry journey across the Irish Sea from Cairnryan to Larne.

The Neuro Therapy Centre supports people across Cheshire, the Wirral and North Wales who have long-term degenerative neurological conditions including Parkinson’s Disease, MND, Ataxia, Fibromyalgia and MS and their Carers. It usually supports people from its building in Saltney with a wide variety of therapies including one-to-one and group physiotherapy, counselling and oxygen therapy as well as a whole host of social activities. During the current time the Centre has turned to offering live exercise sessions using Zoom, offering social activities online and is undertaking regular telephone support to its members to offer advice and socialisation.

“We were thrilled to hear that as Lady Captain, Christine had chosen the Neuro Therapy Centre as her charity to support this year. Unfortunately the year has not gone how any of us expected it to, which was especially disappointing for us, as we had lots of events planned to celebrate our 35th anniversary this year. We are very grateful that Christine chose to raise funds for the Centre in a new way - the money will make a big difference to us, especially while we are having to support people virtually,” said Shannah Goodrick Corporate and Community Fundraiser at the Neuro Therapy Centre.
