From 13 March 2021 to 30 March 2021 they will take part in Everest Base Camp Trek with Discover Adventure.

Everest Base Camp, perched on the Khumbu Glacier at the foot of Everest is at an altitude of 5600 metres. The entire trek is 130 km (80 miles) round trip. Matt is a Personal Trainer and is qualified in Sports Massage so he will be able to offer his 79 year old Grandad advice, help and support prior to the trek and also along the way.

Alan’s niece, Izzy McEgan, after finishing her first year at Liverpool University in July 2019 was working at Camp America when she was diagnosed with stage 4 renal cell carcinoma. She flew home to immediately begin treatment, despite being told the condition was too advanced to be curable.

Claire House Children’s Hospice were involved in her care from the very beginning, including providing 24 hour advice and care, counselling for Izzy and her parents, complementary therapies, hydrotherapy and even organising a back stage tour to meet the cast of her favourite show Les Miserables.

After 10 months of treatment, her condition quickly deteriorated. With visitor restrictions in place and having been isolated from family, including her sister, and friends for over 2 months, it was important to Izzy that she remain at home. Claire House nurses came to ensure Izzy had all necessary palliative care to be comfortable and pain free and were there to support the whole family.

Due to the care and dedication of Claire House, Izzy passed away very peacefully, at home in her own bed, surrounded by the people who loved her on Sunday 10th May 2020.

“We will be forever grateful to all the staff at Claire House, especially Laura, Jane, Lesley, Lou and Paula for the love, care and compassion shown to Izzy and the whole family, making the worst possible time more bearable”.

The current crisis means all charities are finding fund raising challenging. It would be devastating for any family finding themselves in a similar situation to not have access to the charitable services Claire House freely offer and we give thanks for any donations which enable this.

Claire House Children’s Hospice helps seriously & terminally ill children live life to the full, creating wonderful memories & bringing back a sense of normality to family life.

Through specialist nursing & emotional support Claire House helps families smile when life couldn’t get any tougher. Charity Registration No. 1004058.
