Mill House Café opened it’s doors in November in the old mill house at Kingsley Mill, hence it’s name! This had previously been the tack and clothing store, which has been relocated to the feed and pet supplies building.
Situated between the villages of Kingsley and Crowton, the family business, established for over 100 years currently employs over 20 staff. It has evolved over the years from not only supplying the local farming community but pet owners and smallholders alike. A substantial part of the business caters for horse owners and all their requirements.
The new café is a really exciting venture for director Adrian Gibson and his wife, Chris.
“We want to offer a place where people can relax, take a few minutes, see the mill pool, the ducks and the surroundings as well as enjoying some great food and drink” Adrian said. “A huge effort has been made to source food and ingredients from local producers. I think customers will be pleasantly surprised at the quality of products on our menu and what the local area has to offer. We would also like to thank the local tradesmen, customers and staff for all their hard work and support while the café was being developed.”
The café serves breakfasts, light lunches, afternoon tea and coffee. It is fully licensed and also offers a delicious choice of ice cream from Daresbury Dairy in a variety of tantalising flavours and homemade cakes using free range eggs.
On a previous visit I’d enjoyed a tasty panini, served with salad, coleslaw and chips but as it was a chilly late morning in January this time I had my heart set on an All Day Breakfast! I chose the vegetarian option, which was delicious. Homemade cheese and leek potato cake, wilted spinach, baked vine tomatoes, mushrooms, ramekin of beans, two eggs - fried, poached or scrambled and a choice of white, brown or granary toast with butter. There is also the option of hash browns if your particularly hungry.
The lunch menu includes a variety of sandwiches (even homemade fish fingers!), panini’s, steak ciabatta, locally made burgers from Sheaf Farm Shop, quiche, homemade soup and salads. There is also a children’s menu and a specials board. Afternoon tea is served from 2pm.
Mill House Café can seat 60 customers and has a lawned area outside which will come into it’s own in the warmer months. Inside, as well as the spacious main room, there is also a lounge area with comfy sofas and even a television if you want to take a relaxing break. In addition, a separate area which can seat up to 30 people is ideal for groups. If you are planning on a group visit it would be advisable to book so that the area can be reserved. Private functions can also be catered for.
Tastefully decorated and furnished, there’s a warm, cosy atmosphere and the staff are extremely pleasant and helpful.
