devenshire bakery, frodshamBakes speciality breads... a must this summer

We recently enjoyed a weekend sampling delicious speciality breads from The Devonshire Bakery, that are available at the weekend or to order.

A wide selection of bread is available, made in the traditional way with a bulk fermentation period.

On Friday I arrived home with Ciabatta, Multi-grain, GI and Spelt to try.

Spelt is the original form of our modern types of wheat. This was very well timed as my Aunty Jean was visiting and having experienced digestive problems with ‘normal’ bread, she was very keen to try the spelt having read that it is easily digested and very nutritious too.

The verdict? Delicious! As with all of the breads we tried, Spelt has a delicate crust, unlike some of the chewy supermarket versions. With a light dusting of wholemeal flour and very lightly seeded inside, it was very tasty.

Another fashionable bread is the Low GI bread. Rated as Low Glycaemic index this bread will help you feel full longer and sustain your energy levels - a great tasting bread that’s great for your waist, sounds good to me! A multiseed moist loaf, it was very flavoursome, and quite aromatic.

The Ciabatta was airy, tasty and suitably oily, so many Ciabattas I find to be hard and crunchy but the Dev has it just right.

Moving on; the Multi Grain was nice and springy and once again, no dry crusts here! How do they get the crusts so perfect?

Devonshire bakery is a family run business, which has been trading in Cheshire for over a hundred years; so it’s no wonder that they’ve got it spot on! In addition to the main bakery and cake studio in Frodsham, two additional shops are at Runcorn and Weaverham.

Saturday’s samples were equally moorish and a little unusual. Bacon, cheese and tomato bread certainly had a unique flavour that Chris particularly enjoyed and I was far from disappointed with the Apricot, cinnamon and sultana loaf, wonderful!

In addition to the beautiful cakes, pastries and bread, savoury products are also baked on a daily basis and sold the same day. Some of these products may be purchased from the freezer for baking at home.

So whether you’ve got friends coming over, planning a picnic or just fancy a change, pop into the Devonshire Bakery and tantalize your taste buds!
